Water for Elephants (2011)

Pure "entertainment," with typical Hollywood polish. I had to see this film for work, otherwise I don't generally see movies like this so it's almost difficult for me to judge. It wasn't bad, just not my kind of movie, I think. I loved Christoph Waltz in Inglorious Basterds and he was pretty good as the tragic circus ringmaster. Curious to see what Francis Lawrence might do with an indie, or something he has a bit more say over.

The Big Lebowski (1998)

It's hard to explain what's so great about this film. It's a film only the Coen Brothers could have made, with their trademark eccentricity. The screenplay is relentlessly funny and is probably the film's greatest strength, but Jeff Bridges is legendary as The Dude, and John Goodman is almost equally brilliant as Walter Sobchak.

Barton Fink (1991)

Typical Coen film. Perhaps it was more of a revelation when it came out twenty years ago, but today it strikes me as a run of the mill good but not great Coen Brothers film. Enjoyable and funny with moments of brilliance, but not my favorite from them.

The Future (2011)

Almost everything about this film was excellent. I love how inventive Miranda July is. She truly has her own voice and she's confident using it. I especially liked the score by Jon Brion (who also scored Eternal Sunshine, one of my favorite scores) and the cinematography (shot on RED!). The acting is great, the dialogue is great. There are weaknesses, but I felt they were overcome by the strength of the characters and the originality of the story. Now I've got to see her first film.

The Fabulous Destiny of Amelie Poulain (2001)

This is a good film, but I don't love it as much as everybody else seems to. Yann Tiersen's score and especially the main theme is unforgettable.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience (2008)

Fully entertaining; a smart blockbuster. Loved it in IMAX. Heath Ledger is incredible as the Joker.
